The Art of Growing Nutrient Dense Foods

Nutrient Dense Foods are edible plants which contain maximum amounts of Vitamins and Minerals. Foods grown in healthy, vibrant soils are more prone to supply us with edible plants containing high amounts of nutrients. Soil, like any living being, needs nourishment and constant care. Feeding your garden soil with compost, manure, mulch, and other natural amendments keeps your soil healthy and full of life. There are many benefits to keeping your soil fed and nourished, including less unwanted weeds and pests. If you are just starting out and need a kick start to growing vegetables and fruits, then we recommend you amend your soil with effective micro-organisms (EM-1) or produce your own using the Bokashi method of kitchen composting. My partner, Monika has been experimenting with both of these methods with remarkable results (you can find lots of helpful information here on our website). The greenest greens and largest, most succulent vegetables and fruits we have ever grown were produced with the help of both Bokashi composting and EM-1. On our new ‘Mini-Farm’ here in Nellysford Virginia, we have inherited amazingly rich and vital soil which requires little or no amending. Still, we are composting and mulching to maintain a healthy level of productivity.
